Sisterhood

It seems like whenever I photograph siblings and begin to pose them next to one another, I get that same look.  You know the one, “Really?  I have to sit by her?”  I always reply by saying, “Yes, you have to pretend you love each other for just a few minutes.  I promise it won’t kill you!”  These moments with my little clients often make me smile inside and think back to when my sister and I were growing up.  With only 18 months separating us, we were a force to be reckoned with.  I don’t think we could have even pretended to like one another, let alone “love” one another if we tried.  When I think back at how badly we fought, I cringe.  We were shameless, and I’m NOT exaggerating.  I can remember a time when we were fighting in public, and I can’t believe I’m telling you this, but I actually took a swing at her with my purse.  She ducked and I almost took out a storefront window.  My poor mother!  I can also remember a time when we fought while getting ready for school.  It was over something stupid, again, and she threw a large bottle of Aqua Net at me.  Ah, the 80’s.  I was able to run down the hall to safety and shut my bedroom door just before the bottle hit the door and left a huge dent in the wood.  It was not pretty and never something I look back on proudly.

While there were some pretty bad, knock-down fights, there are also memories I cherish.  I remember skating together on an ice rink my parents made for us on our back patio.  There were times we built snow forts on the side of our house after huge snowfalls.  How come we never get snow like that anymore?!  We’d play hours in the creek behind our house.   One time she got stuck up in a tree that was struck by lightning the night before; it involved four fire trucks to get her down safely.  I’ll save that story for another time. 🙂  Finally, there were times when we had nothing better to do, so we’d ride down the stairs in our sleeping bags and pretend we were on a roller coaster.  We didn’t always have good times, but we had a history together that no one else shares.

Nowadays, we call each other when we need something, a paper that needs editing, a listening ear that’s needed for a newly written speech. . .  or my sister will simply stop by on a Saturday morning, after a twelve-hour night shift at Sherman, surprise my kids with some donuts she picked up at the 7-eleven and catch up with me for a bit.  Today, I couldn’t imagine not having my sister around and having the opportunity to watch our kids grow up together.  (Incidentally, our firstborns share a birthday!)

So, when I hear those grunts and groans or see a sour look on their faces, I remind my little clients that one day they will be happy they have one another and the history that made them who they are today.

After this session, I was inspired to find a good quote about sisters.  Nothing too mushy, but something that was fitting for these two little ladies.

DeVos 2015 15

The most fitting quote I could find was this, “A sister is a little bit of childhood that can never be lost.”  –unknown

I hope that one day when these two sisters look back and see these pictures, they will remember all of the good times they had together and forever hold onto that little bit of childhood.

She said yes on September 4, 2015!

When my teammate told me he was going to propose to his girlfriend and that he wanted me to photograph it, I was so excited!  His girlfriend, also a teacher, is pretty organized.  Ryan knew it was going to take some strategic planning to pull off a surprise proposal.  So here was the plan:  Ryan told Amy to meet him for dinner at Emmett’s in downtown, Dundee Friday evening. . .

He got there early, gave the hostess a card to give to Amy when she arrived at the restaurant, and picked up two dozen roses.

He set things up at the place where they had their first kiss.

The wait began.  Amy called saying she was running about 15 minutes late.  It was hot out!  I don’t know how he survived wearing that suit the whole time.  At one point an elderly couple strolled by, chatted with him and sat on the nearby benches.  I was hiding across the street in the parking lot of the Dundee convenience store and wasn’t sure if I should step in and get them out of there.  Finally, they got up and strolled off.  Whew!

Here she is walking into Emmett’s completely unsuspecting.  I had never met Amy before, but I had a hunch this might have been her.  Sure enough she came back out of Emmett’s with the card in her hand.  The message in the card directed her to walk to the area where they had their first kiss.

I felt like such a stalker. 🙂

Ryan showed Amy the receipt for the sidewalk brick he ordered that will have “Ryan and Amy Ehmen” etched on it.  Unfortunately, it couldn’t be made in time for the proposal.  I’m not sure what happened at this point because she looked like she might be a little confused about what he was suggesting. 🙂  But then he got down on one knee. . .

But that’s not all!  Ryan had one more thing he had to do.

Being true “Bachelor” fans, he had to ask her if she’d accept his rose. . .

which she did.  And they lived happily ever after!  🙂 <3

I almost forgot!  Remember that couple I was telling you about?  Well, they came back to congratulate the newly engaged couple!  Yeah, that’s right.  I’m taking your picture.  What did you expect!? You made yourself part of the story, and I could’t just leave you out!

Congratulations Ryan and Amy!

What do you get when you combine Paw Patrol, Minions and The Hunger Games?

A .5 Celebration Lesko-style! 🙂  All of my children were born in the winter, two of which were born within a few weeks of Christmas.  Add in four more family members who have December birthdays and you have one hectic December!  We decided to try something a little different this year by celebrating all three birthdays on the same day in the summer.  By having the party in the summer, we were able to do activities we would have never been able to do around their actual birthdays.  Fortunately for us, we were blessed with perfect weather!  The little ones enjoyed swimming and a water slide while the older kids played on the Slip’N Slide, had a water balloon fight and played with Oobleck.  Each kid chose their own special party theme.  Currently, Sammy is a HUGE Paw Patrol fan.  So much so that he pulled a chair up to the counter in the kitchen, pressed the fire and police symbol on our ADT system and yelled, “Paw Patrol to the rescue!”  Sounds cute, until the Gilberts Police and Rutland Fire Department along with the Elgin Fire Department (as backup) show up at your door step.  Man, this kid is quick; you can’t take your eyes off of him for a minute!  Annie chose a minion theme and Madison picked The Hunger Games for her theme.  Unfortunately, there are no decorations at the party stores for The Hunger Games, so I had to consult my new best friend, Pinterest.  Of course, there were so many ideas on Pinterest, only time could stop me.  In the end, I think everyone had a great time.  Even though it was a little strange celebrating their birthdays at the halfway point, we’re glad we did.

I wanted to blog about this personal event to give a shout out to all of the people who helped us make this party special, especially Daisy from Piece-A-Cake Bakery in the Dundee.  Not only were these cake delicious, she really outdid herself decorating them.  The Katniss cake especially turned out amazing, and I know she put a lot of hard work into making it just right!  (FYI-Maddie cried when we finally cut into it.) Thank you, Daisy!  And thank you to all of the dear family and friends who came out to celebrate with us.  It truly wouldn’t have been a celebration without you!

I’m Aging Dog Years Here People!

It’s true.  I’m terrible at deleting texts and emails.  At one point, my inbox was so full, Yahoo just started counting over.  As I was going through my text messages and finally deleting the old, I came across a series of texts from my brother in law, Andy.  He and his wife, Christina, were thrown a major curveball, which resulted in my nephew being born three months early.  One of the last texts we received from Andy was when it was confirmed that the baby was coming, like it or not, before heading into the delivery room.  He wrote, “I’m aging dog years here people!”   Despite all the craziness and being in another state, we were kept up to date every step of the way.  It was exciting and terrifying at the same time!  In the end, we got the call that David was born, weighing in just under 3 pounds and breathing on his own.  We knew he was a strong little guy, and he continues to grow and flourish beyond expectations.  He’s huge!

Lions and Tigers and Bears. . .

Well not exactly.  We visited the Brookfield Zoo the other day, and while it’s not my favorite thing to do, I do try to get over there at least once a year for my kiddos.  Whew! It was a hot one, and so many animals were either indoors or hanging out in the shade.  However, we did get to see most of the animals my kids wanted to see.  The dolphins stole the show though!  There was a mama and her calf that swam around together, as well as a few dolphins who really took to the kids and were incredibly interactive.  At one point, one of the dolphins came right up to the kids and smiled.  It was crazy to see all of his teeth up close!!!
